This week’s words are brought to you from New York City baby!
Discombobulating
This is a word which means to confuse the issue or matter, or to make things generally confusing.
Garrulous
This refers to someone who talks too much about something of no particular importance. It can be used to refer to someone who jabbers or natter, and who is talkative, wordy and voluble. It comes from the Latin word garrulus (‘chattering’, ‘talkative’).
Obsequious
This word refers to someone who is smarmy, submissive, flattering and creepy towards others. It comes from the Latin word obsequor (‘comply with’)
Prognosticate
This word means to prophesise, predict, foretell, prefigure, forecast. In other words, to know what’s going to happen.
Titivating
This means to smarten up, put finishing touches to, spruce up, tart up, dress up, adorn, beautify, do up. An excellent example is someone putting the final touches to his or her look: adjusting their tie or hair is the act of titivating.
